New Exhibit: Penn's Woods

Our latest exhibit highlights the regional history of woodworking and carpentry. From the Pennsylvania forests emerged building techniques, tools, trades, and crafts that helped make Westmoreland County what it is today. Explore this history through historic woodworking tools, furnishings, photographs, documents, and stories across centuries. Enjoy this exhibit during the Education Center's open hours on Thursday-Sunday.

Civil War Encampment and Reenactment - July 31 - Aug. 1

Discover the history of the Civil War at Historic Hanna's Town. Displays and presentations will explore the Civil War communications using the Post Officetelegraph, and signal flags system; women in the Civil War; Southern medicine; the Zouave Light Infantry; veteran groupsand a first-person narration by a reenactor portraying General George Meade, best known for leading Union forces to victory at Gettysburg.

A special musical performance will be presented 46th Pennsylvania Regiment Band (Logan Guards) on Saturday night.

Call for Nominations! Arthur St. Clair Awards

This award is presented annually to those individuals, organizations, businesses or educational institutions that have made a significant and sustainable contribution to the preservation of our historic places, documents, records or stories, and by doing so, are keeping alive Westmoreland County's rich history and heritage for future generations.
Nominations must be submitted to the Westmoreland Historical Society office by 5 p.m. on August 13.

Guided Tours of Historic Hanna's Town

Learn about life on the western frontier during the Revolutionary War and the roots of American justice at Historic Hanna’s Town. Founded in 1773, Hanna’s Town acted as the first Seat of Westmoreland County and hosted the first English courts west of the Allegheny Mountains. Now a county park and historic site, Hanna’s Town invites you to be a witness to history!

Historic Hanna's Town is open for guided tours Thursday-Sunday starting in June. Reservations recommended. Grounds open all year from dawn to dusk.

Lefevre House Reconstruction

Over the past year, the Lefevre House was carefully taken apart from its original location in Jeannette and reconstructed at Historic Hanna's Town, joining many other reconstructed buildings and structures that interpret early American history.

Pandemic 2020: Help Preserve History as it Happens

The Westmoreland Historical Society is teaming up with the Saint Vincent College Department of History to create a digital archive documenting the COVID-19 experiences of people in the Westmoreland County area.

Our Mission

The Westmoreland Historical Society is an educational organization dedicated to acquiring and managing resources related to the history of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania and using these resources to encourage a diverse audience to make connections to the past, develop an understanding of the present, and provide direction for the future.
