Christmas Past is a self-guided outdoor walking tour along the paths at Historic Hanna’s Town, which served as the first seat of government for Westmoreland County established in 1773. Signs along the paths explore the early history of Christmas, from its ancient origins to 19th century traditions that still survive today, including the history of Christmas trees, Santa Claus, and holiday decorations. This tour complements the indoor Christmas Memories exhibit, focusing on Christmases from the 1930s-1950s, located in the Kendra Gallery at the Westmoreland History Education Center.
Self-guided walking tour is free and open to the public dawn to dusk. Please note that while the grounds and Education Center are open, historic buildings are closed for the season.

The coal and coke industry is a very important part of Westmoreland’s history. Prior to the Civil War, Westmoreland’s economy was largely based on agriculture, and 80% of the county was farmland. After 1850, the market for coal and coke grew. Aided by the expansion of railroads, Pittsburgh became a nearly insatiable market for Westmoreland’s coal and coke, contributing to a four-fold increase in the county’s population between 1870 and 1920.
Brunch will be served upon arrival. Please arrive by 12:30.
