Event Details
The Westmoreland Historical Society will observe the 20th anniversary of September 11 with a special service at Historic Hanna’s Town.
The observance is open to the public and will take place at the Fort at Historic Hanna’s Town. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair if they wish to be seated.
Members of Proctor’s Militia, I.B.W.C.P., who represent the first Westmoreland County militia established at Hanna’s Town during the Revolutionary War, will conduct a flag raising ceremony and the traditional military command “reverse arms” or “mourn on your arms.” A moment of silence will be observed at 8:46 a.m. to mark when the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. The observance will also include a performance of “Taps.” Following the observance, families with children can stay for a reading of an age-appropriate picture book that sensitively discusses the event.
The Westmoreland Historical Society mourns the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and all of those who have suffered as a result of this tragedy and acts of terrorism. Our hearts are with our neighbors in Somerset County, the site of the Flight 93 crash, as well as those in New York City and Washington, D.C.

A signature event at Historic Hanna’s Town that will bridge excitement and celebration for our nation’s 250th anniversary this year! Step back into history and explore life during the American Revolution on the Pennsylvania frontier. Be a witness to history and experience the liveliness of frontier court at Hanna’s Town. Discover the vibrant world of watercolor painting through the unique palette crafted from farm products and local foraged pigments at Historic Hanna’s Town. We will be walking the trails and area to collect pigment and create our own watercolor paint with local farm fresh honey!
What are natural watercolor pigments? Natural watercolor pigments are derived from organic materials, offering a rich, earthy palette that synthetic paints often lack. By using elements sourced from local farms and natural foraging, artists can create stunning works that reflect the beauty of their surroundings.
Please dress accordingly for walking in wooded areas.
Historic Hanna’s Town is a beautiful and quiet Westmoreland County park. While we do work to preserve our historic built environment on site, we are also dedicated to preserving our natural environment through demonstration gardens, native plant restoration, and developing walking trails.
Pre-registration encouraged. Walk-ins also welcome. Please check in at the front desk of the Museum Shop upon arrival.
$10 for non-members | $8 for members.
