Join us at Historic Hanna’s Town for a fun celebration of fall and the Halloween season with historic demonstrations and outdoor activities.
Members of Proctor’s Militia, I.B.W.C.P., will be camped at Historic Hanna’s Town and sharing the history of the Westmoreland County militia, established at Hanna’s Town in 1775, and life for settlers on the Pennsylvania frontier. Proctor’s Militia will demonstrate 18th century military drills tentatively at 1:00 p.m. (weather depending).
The blacksmith shop will be open for demonstrations.
Dressing up in costume is encouraged for trick-or-treating around the historic site. Enjoy fall crafts. Take a self-guided history walk along one of our short trails to learn about the history of Halloween.
Around 1:30 p.m., take a guided walk up to the family cemeteries on the hill. Learn about the families who settled the property after the destruction of Hanna’s Town.
Enjoy hay rides around a field at Historic Hanna’s Town from Noon. – 5:30 p.m. Donations accepted.
The Westmoreland History Shop will feature seasonal décor, local history books for adults and children, 18th century inspired toys and games, historically inspired home decor, handmade ceramics and jewelry, and Hanna’s Town themed keepsakes.
The program includes admission to the exhibit Westmoreland 250: Telling Our Story with 25 Objects in the Kendra Gallery of the Westmoreland History Education Center.
PROGRAM FEE: Enjoy all activities with our regular admission price to Historic Hanna’s Town. Free for Westmoreland Historical Society members and children 5 and under; $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and students through grade 12.

11:00 a.m.– 4:00 p.m.: all day activities including living history demonstrations, crafts, self-guided history walk, exhibit gallery, and more
12:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.: Hay rides
1:00 p.m.: Demonstration of 18th century military drills by Proctor’s Militia
1:30 p.m.: Guided walk to the small cemeteries on the hill

Join archivist, historian and author Thomas White as he explores the history and cultural meaning behind some of our region’s early legends and supernatural tales. Hear the stories of Old Tom Fossit, Braddock’s Gold, and the legend of Oppaymolleah’s Curse. Encounter the ghosts who haunt the Old Quaker Church, the spirits of escaped slaves and a confederate soldier on Duquesne’s campus, and the spirits of the Depreciation Lands Museum. Learn the truth about the Witch of the Monongahela, Judge Reddick’s contest with the Devil, the area known as “The Dark Place”, and many other spooky tales.
A variety of books by Tom White will be available to purchase in our Museum Gift Shop.

About the Speaker:
Thomas White is the University Archivist and Curator of Special Collections at Duquesne University. He is also an Adjunct Professor in Duquesne’s History Department and an Adjunct Professor of History at La Roche University. White specializes in public history, folklore and the history of supernatural beliefs. He is the author of 11 books including The Witch of the Monongahela: Folk Magic in Early Western Pennsylvania, Legends and Lore of Western Pennsylvania, Haunted Roads of Western Pennsylvania, Supernatural Lore of Pennsylvania: Ghosts, Monsters and Miracles, Forgotten Tales of Pittsburgh, Ghosts of Southwestern Pennsylvania, and Witches of Pennsylvania: Occult History and Lore.

The quaint and historic setting hosts numerous vendors offering a variety of one-of-a-kind items covering a wide price range.Antiques and Collectibles is held the second Sunday of the month May through October. For 2026, these dates are May 10, June 14, July 12, August 9, September 13, and October 11.This event will be held rain or shine. Sorry, no pets are permitted; service animals only.ADMISSION: $5 per car.VENDORS: Vendors of antiques, folk art, historical crafts, and collectibles (please no flea market items) are welcome to set up for the day or weekend.
