Irish Genealogy Workshop

Benefitting beginners and seasoned genealogists alike, this in-depth workshop will examine a multitude of historic records and electronic resources that will advance your Irish genealogy research. Mullan will be stateside for the United States tour, with Hunt participating remotely from Belfast.

This day-long program will explore new insights into a myriad of historic records and electronic resources. Featuring live Question and Answer sessions and interactive networking opportunities, this workshop will foster connections between attendees and expert speakers. 

Presentations include:

• Introduction to Irish and Scots-Irish Family History Research
• Using printed sources for Irish family history: newspapers, street directories, Ordnance Survey Memoirs and British parliamentary papers on Ireland
• Early nineteenth-century land records: Tithe applotment books, tithe defaulters, freeholders’ registers, First/Townland Valuation
• Irish education and school records: a valuable alternative to non-available census records for nineteenth century research

Along with experts from the Ulster Historical Foundation, representatives from the History Center’s Detre Library & Archives, the Westmoreland Historical Society, and other local genealogical societies will be on hand to share best practices and tips with visitors and fellow researchers. 

REGISTRATION & ADMISSION

Admission is $30 for History Center, Westmoreland Historical Society, and Ulster Historical Foundation Guild members and $40 for non-members.  

This is a hybrid program. Attendees can participate either online or in-person at the Heinz History Center. In-person attendance will be limited to the first 44 people who register. 

At the request of our speakers and in the interest of public health, in-person attendees must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination upon arrival, along with proper identification. Social distancing and masking will be enforced. Depending on public health conditions at the time of the program, we may revert to all-virtual format and send updated instructions to all registrants.  

Boxed lunches will not be provided this year to mitigate the risk of spreading COVID-19. A list of local lunch spots will be provided to guests in advance.
